100th Birthday Celebration Allison-Drayton 025  100th Birthday Celebration Allison-Drayton 012

When it comes to the secret of their longevity, both Carol Drayton and Hilah Allison, new centurions at The Johnson Center & Village, credited stress-free living. As Carol put it: “Don’t worry and just be happy.”

The two were showered with cards and birthday hugs as more than 50 residents, family members and staff gathered in the living room of the retirement community last Friday to celebrate with cake and wish them both a happy 100th birthday. Hilah’s actual birthday was on Friday, and Carol marks a century this coming Wednesday.

For Hilah, it was a chance to catch up with old friends and family members, several who had traveled some 600 miles from her former hometown of Kansas City. Among them, was Farrel Morrow, a former student whom Hilah had taught in the 7th grade sometime in the early 1950s (he couldn’t recall the year) and who had attended church with Hilah for years before she moved to here in 2007.

Morrow said he had received an email from his church encouraging members to send cards to her for her birthday.
“I told my wife I don’t want to mail it to her, I want to hand it to her. I came all the way out here to help my dear one celebrate.”

Enjoying birthday cake with Carol were four of her six great-grandchildren. A native of Orchard, Nebraska, Carol, who helped her husband farm, moved to The Johnson Center & Village community two years ago. Said her daughter, Ann: “My mother can’t believe she’s still alive.”

Carol and Hilah are just two of 11 residents aged 100 or older who call one of Christian Living Communities’ (CLC) home.
