Aging in Place—and Loving It: Judy’s Active Life at Clermont Park

August 7, 2025

At Clermont Park Retirement Community, “retirement” doesn’t mean slowing down—it means thriving. Just ask Judy Christensen. A retired pharmacist, proud mother and grandmother, and all-around people-person, Judy has found the perfect place to live life to the fullest—socially, physically, mentally, and spiritually. Since moving into The Willows independent living neighborhood at Clermont Park more than two years ago, Judy has packed her days with purpose and positivity.

“I’m aging in place,” she says with a grin, “and it’s all good.”

Moving with Intention

Judy chose Clermont Park for a very practical reason: the community’s life plan model.

“I saw what my mother went through—moving every time her care needs changed,” Judy says. “I wanted a different path. With Clermont Park’s Life Care contract, I can stay here and transition into other levels of care if I need them. That gives me peace of mind.”

And while the future is planned for, Judy is firmly focused on the present. She’s got a schedule full of exercise classes, social events, volunteer roles, and a supportive, vibrant community of friends who keep her on the move.

Fitness That’s Fun

“I work out every day,” Judy says. And she’s not exaggerating. Clermont Park offers daily, instructor-led fitness classes, and Judy is a regular.

“Carolina teaches Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Lisa’s got Tuesdays and Thursdays. Their routines are different and fun—and we get a great workout!”

With classes that include aerobic warmups, balance work, and stretching, residents benefit from personalized attention in small groups.

“We’ve got so many great ways to stay moving here,” she adds. “You just have to show up.”

Judy especially loves the exercise balls, which she says can make exercises, “surprisingly intense!” Judy also occasionally joins the water aerobics class at the Schlessman YMCA, just down the road from Clermont Park. This class used to be led by her longtime friend Joan and current Clermont Park neighbor.

Making Meaningful Connections

Judy’s life is rooted in meaningful relationships. Her daughter and grandson live nearby, and her ex-husband remains a close friend. She keeps in touch with sorority sisters, former coworkers, YMCA friends, and neighbors from her previous home in Yale Park. “I’m very gregarious,” she says. “I love meeting new people.”

Judy’s social calendar at Clermont also rivals that of someone half her age. She serves as head of Clermont Park’s Ambassador program, welcoming new residents and making sure they feel at home. “Every floor has two ambassadors. If someone’s sick, we make sure they get their meals and mail. I introduce new resident to all community activities—it’s about making sure no one feels left out.”

Her social circle extends far beyond her own floor. Judy volunteers on Saturday mornings in the community gift shop and is active in the Residents Visiting Residents program, where neighbors from independent living visit residents in skilled nursing and memory care weekly.

“I bring them the community activities schedule, so they know what’s going on. We’re one community here, no matter your health needs,” she says.

And when she’s not volunteering or working out, Judy’s likely rehearsing for plays. Clermont Park’s theater group has become one of her favorite pastimes.

“I never acted until I moved here,” she admits. “My first play was a murder mystery—and I was the bad guy!” She’s already eyeing a role in the upcoming production, Murder by Advertisement.

Judy’s grateful for the friendships she’s made at Clermont Park—and the opportunities to keep growing. “Whether it’s acting in a play, sweating in a fitness class, or delivering coffee to memory care residents, I get to be involved in a real community. That’s what makes life here so rich.”

A Place to Grow—Mind and Spirit

“There are a lot of smart people here,” Judy says. “Book Talk gives us all a chance to share and discover new things.”

Through the Book Talk program, Judy’s shared two of her favorite books with fellow residents, including The Last Five Wishes of Mr. Murray McBride and Maus, an illustrated memoir of a Holocaust survivor.

The community’s spiritual inclusiveness is something Judy treasures as well. “I’m Catholic, but we have residents of many faiths—and some of none. Everyone is respected here. Our diversity is what makes this place so special.”

Looking Ahead

For Judy, retirement isn’t about winding down—it’s about leaning in. Into connection, movement, service, and joy. So if you’re considering a move to a retirement community for yourself or a loved one, take a cue from Judy: “Come to Clermont Park. The opportunities to stay active and connected are endless. And the people? They’re the best part.”
