Clermont Park chaplains Brian Bortz and Mike Van Eps often reflect on the work they are called to perform as spiritual caregivers and agree that Clermont Park provides an exceptional environment for this mission. Built on the 5 Pillars of Wellness for Seniors (Social, Intellectual, Physical, Purpose, and Spiritual), we are committed to providing a full spectrum of wellness to each of our residents.
The 5 Pillars of Wellness For Seniors
Clermont Park’s Life Enrichment model is built on five pillars of well-being: social connection, intellectual engagement, purposeful living, physical health, and spiritual growth. Our resident-directed programs promote autonomy and choice. Activities, classes, events, and excursions are developed with residents and are often led by residents.
Physical Wellness
Physical health is often the most visible aspect of wellness. It encompasses regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate rest. At Clermont Park, we encourage healthy Choices and habits, independence, and inclusive fitness classes that sustain and improve function. Remaining physically healthy is paramount for overall wellness. Health impacts every aspect of our lives, from daily activities to the long-term ability to function. Prioritizing physical health through balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and preventive healthcare measures can enhance longevity, resilience, and overall quality of life.
Intellectual Engagement
Intellectual Engagement and supporting brain health through lifelong learning is essential for mental clarity and resilience. Activities like reading, solving puzzles, or learning new skills can stimulate intellectual growth. A commitment to lifelong learning fosters personal growth, adaptability, and intellectual curiosity.
Purposeful Living
Living a life of purpose provides a reason to keep moving forward instead of staying complacent and wasting away. Our willingness to engage in life may change as life changes, but staying rooted in purpose provides meaning and a sense of direction. Having a framework to help make decisions and orient life can help contribute to feelings of value, being of service to others, and overall well-being.
Social Wellness
Humans are designed for connection with other humans. Social wellness focuses on fostering meaningful relationships that uplift and encourage. Whether through social groups, family time, or acts of service, investing in community strengthens bonds and provides a network of care during life’s ups and downs. Being part of a supportive community helps to provide connection, belonging, and emotional enrichment. Shared experiences, collaboration, and encouragement provide valuable social support. Clermont Park is committed to intentionally building a community through shared experiences and values, bringing together residents through authentic relationships.
Spiritual Wellness
At the core of wellness is spiritual health. Practices like prayer, worship, and finding spiritual connection nurture our souls. For most people, a well-lived life encompasses some level of spiritual connection. Whether in the form of formal religion or spiritual practices, residents can connect to something bigger than themselves. By nurturing spiritual and emotional well-being, we feel a soul connection to our purpose, beliefs, and values.
Following the 5 Pillars of Wellness for Seniors allows us to create communities where aging is both honored and celebrated. We are committed to meeting each resident where they’re at in their aging journey. Our goal is to use these Pillars of Wellness to encourage residents to continue to grow, contribute to their communities, and pursue their passions. We believe in partnering with residents to empower them to lead community-based initiatives and activities and to share their gifts and experiences with the community.
By integrating these 5 Pillars of Wellness for Seniors into daily life, Clermont Park creates a balanced foundation for flourishing physically, intellectually, socially, spiritually and with purpose. This holistic approach not only enhances personal well-being but also equips us to enhance the lives of our senior communities as a whole.
