Several senior living professionals in Colorado braved the snow earlier this week to spend the morning at the Colorado State capitol. The purpose of our Day on the Hill was to meet with our legislators to discuss the importance of the 2019 legislative issues that will impact our seniors.
My visit to the capitol was with a group of LeadingAge professionals, in partnership with Metropolitan State University of Denver. LeadingAge is the state’s largest association representing the full spectrum of senior living and aging services providers.
I met with Senator Rob Rodriguez and was scheduled to meet with Representative Alec Garnett, but met with his legislative aide due to a last minute change in his schedule. As the senior living professionals met primarily with legislators from the district of their community or organization, we asked for their support of funding for long-term care services and supports; support in life care institution operating reserves; and support in funding for affordable housing for seniors. We also asked they oppose reduce reductions impacting PACE (Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) providers.
It was exciting to be in the place where important decisions are made that impact so many people in Colorado, including older adults. I was impressed that many truly want to make positive changes in our state. One message I want to share is to be sure to let legislators know your position on issues that are important to you. Do not be shy about calling, emailing, or scheduling an appointment with your local representative. You can make a difference too!
