Clermont Park’s Green Boxes Go a Long Way to Reduce Waste

April 17, 2026

Each year, Earth Day offers an opportunity to reflect on how small, everyday choices can make a meaningful difference for our planet. At Clermont Park Retirement Community, that spirit of stewardship is not just celebrated once a year; it’s woven into daily life.

One standout example is the community’s Green Box Program, a resident-inspired initiative that reduces waste while reinforcing a culture of care and environmental stewardship. Green Boxes are reusable, washable containers used for all takeout meals.

Residents and Dining Team Collaborate to Reduce Food and Packaging Waste

What makes the Green Box program especially meaningful is its origin story. It wasn’t developed as part of a corporate sustainability mandate. It began with a simple idea from a resident, Claire, who saw an opportunity to make a difference. Claire brought the concept to Dining Services Director Kimberly Villa, who recognized its potential and helped bring it to life.

Together, they created a program that is now embraced by residents and staff alike.

At its core, the Green Box program is designed to reduce food and packaging waste.

These containers can then be returned, cleaned, and reused, creating a simple, effective system that minimizes waste while maintaining convenience.

“Our green boxes program started at the beginning of 2024 when Claire suggested we stop using paper and unrecyclable plastics to deliver carry-out from our restaurant,” said Villa.

“Fast forward two years, and we’ve recouped our original $5,000 investment for purchasing the green boxes and reduced our paper purchases by $8,000 in 2025. We anticipate another big reduction in our paper purchases in 2026.”

For residents like Lorin Leslie, the program represents more than just an environmentally friendly option; it reflects the kind of thoughtful community Clermont Park strives to be. As a supporter of the program, Lorin appreciates how easy it is to participate and how impactful it can be over time.

“My wife and I have been here five years and live in the Willows,” said Leslie. “For about 30% of our meals, we do takeout – soups, salads, sandwiches, and we order off the main menu for takeout dinners. It’s nice to know the containers don’t go into the trash, like the old, clear non-recyclable plastic ones.”

Lorin added, “The green box program is very much in line with our recycling values and how we try to protect the environment.”

By choosing a reusable container instead of a disposable one, residents are contributing to a larger effort to reduce landfill waste and conserve resources.

Clermont Park Residents Share a Passion for Conservation

It also speaks to adult children who are helping their parents choose a retirement community. People who are often looking for environments that are not only safe and comfortable, but also progressive and forward-thinking.

Green Boxes checks all the boxes. From a practical standpoint, the program is simple and seamless. Residents who order takeout simply return the boxes for proper cleaning and reuse. Occasionally, the resident ambassadors or dining services committees will go on a sweep to gather them up.

There’s no complicated process—just an easy habit that quickly becomes second nature. And because it’s supported by Dining Services, residents can feel confident that cleanliness and safety standards are always maintained.

For Kimberly Villa, the Green Box program demonstrates that Clermont Park is a community that listens to its residents, encourages their ideas, and takes meaningful steps toward sustainability.

“We follow a Citizenship Model at Clermont Park, where residents aren’t just residents, they are valuable members and citizens of the same community,” said Villa. “Everyone has an equal voice, and our residents have voiced a commitment to caring for the environment.”

Clermont Park’s Culture of Citizenship

According to Villa, programs like this also foster a sense of shared purpose. When residents participate in the Green Box Program, they are part of something larger than themselves. It becomes a conversation starter, a point of pride, and a reflection of the community’s collective values.

“It’s not uncommon to hear residents encouraging one another to participate or sharing why it matters to them,” Villa shared.

This sense of connection is one of the many reasons Clermont Park stands out. While amenities and services are important, it’s our community’s culture that truly defines the experience. A place where residents can bring forward ideas and see them implemented.

Leslie added, “Clermont Park is a place where people feel heard, respected, and empowered.”

Earth Day serves as a reminder that progress often begins with small steps. At Clermont Park, the Green Box program is proof that even a single idea can grow into something impactful when supported by a community that cares.

For families exploring retirement living options, this is an important distinction. Clermont Park is not only focused on providing high-quality care and a vibrant lifestyle. We are also committed to innovation, sustainability, and resident engagement. These qualities help ensure that our community remains forward-thinking while continuing to meet the evolving needs of its residents.

As we celebrate Earth Day, the Green Box program offers a meaningful example of how Clermont Park is making a difference – one reusable container at a time. It’s a simple idea started by a resident, rooted in collaboration, and carried forward by a community that values both people and the planet.
